Croydon Canal at ‘Norwood’

A rare colour print was for sale on EBay recently.

It shows the Croydon Canal in 1828 – the location is described as Norwood.

The artist was George Johann Scharf, a Bavarian who moved to London in 1816.

The previous depictions of Scharf’s picture are shown as a pencil drawing.

Some say the view is of the top lock at Honor Oak. Its not that one which was no.28 and a staircase lock. It could be the next one down, eg lock no.27.
